Best Random Chat Sites in 2026 — Honest Comparison

Since Omegle shut down in November 2023, the random chat space has splintered. There are more platforms than ever claiming to be the best Omegle alternative — but most have significant tradeoffs: paywalls, camera requirements, account sign-ups, or thin moderation.
This is an honest comparison. KoruTalk is on the list and ranks first, but I've tried to be fair about where each platform is genuinely better and who each one is actually for.

How I evaluated these platforms
I looked at four things: cost (is it genuinely free?), friction (does it require an account?), camera requirements (can you use it without video?), and privacy (what data is collected and retained?). These are the factors that actually determine whether a random chat platform is usable for most people.
Moderation quality is harder to evaluate objectively and changes over time, so I've noted it where it's particularly relevant but haven't made it the primary ranking factor.
The camera question
The single most important thing to know about this category is that most platforms are video-first. Chatroulette and Chathub are built around live camera feeds. If you don't have a camera — or don't want to use one — your experience on those platforms will be significantly worse than advertised. Most users will skip you immediately.
KoruTalk is the only platform on this list where camera-free use is the designed, intended experience rather than a workaround. Text chat has no camera at all. Voice chat is audio-only by design.
The free tier problem
"Free" means different things on different platforms. Chathub is technically free but locks gender filtering — one of its main differentiators — behind paid coins. Emerald Chat's free tier is limited enough that you'll hit the paywall quickly. KoruTalk and Chatroulette are genuinely free in the sense that the full experience is available without payment.
What about Omegle?
Omegle shut down permanently in November 2023. The original site is gone and won't come back. Any site currently using the Omegle name or domain is not affiliated with the original. If you're looking for the experience Omegle provided — instant anonymous chat, no account, no camera required — KoruTalk is the closest modern equivalent.
